Grammy Award-winning Nigerian singer, Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has revealed that he converted from Christianity to Islam in his personal quest for truth and understanding.
Speaking in a recent interview with American streamer PlaqueBoyMax, the City Boys crooner said his spiritual journey has taken him through different faiths but has also left him grappling with deeper questions about life and creation.
“I grew up as a Christian, but then I converted to Islam and all types,” Burna Boy said. “It’s like I’ve studied it all. I’m still out here trying to find what’s really going on.”
The Afro-fusion star explained that his shift was driven by a desire to uncover the mysteries of existence, adding that organized religion often appears to be a “controlled mechanism.”
“In all my research, there’s always one scientific fact that goes against every book. Everything comes from the workshop of the sun,” he said. “The more I researched, the more confused I got.”
Despite his uncertainties, Burna Boy said he remains deeply spiritual and believes in a higher power guiding and protecting him.
“All I know is that the truth is there’s something up there protecting me. That’s why when I pray, I feel like I’m being heard,” he stated.
He added that while people often inherit their parents’ beliefs, his own exploration has led him to seek a more personal understanding of faith and spirituality.
